A tractor-trailer truck struck a light pole in the Stop & Shop parking lot on Franklin Street in Westerly early Friday morning, creating a multi-agency emergency situation. The Garelick Farms truck drove over the base of the light fixture, sending the pole and lights crashing to the ground. The crash caused the truck's fuel tank to rupture, spilling diesel fuel. Police said 100 gallons of diesel was leaking out of the damaged vehicle. Dunn's Corners and Westerly fire departments, as well as the Southern League Hazardous Materials unit from Hope Valley were on the scene trying to contain the spill. The state Department of Environmental Management was also called to the scene.
