History of the HVWFD Haz-Mat Team
In 1984 following a Major chemical fire at the Carroll Products CO in Wood River Junction the fire district teamed up with the R.I. Southern Fireman's League and purchased a used Heavy Rescue from Fruit Hill in North Providence and began equipping it as a Special Hazards /Heavy Rescue.
John Leo from DEM was instrumental in training the first HAZMAT team with over 200 hrs of training.
Special Services 500 (500 was the call sign at this time) was equipped with 4 level A suits purchased with funds from the Wakefield Rotary and the Chariho Rotary Club
The team remained active for several years with members from all over Southern R.I. participating, but as time went on with the lack of calls and proper funding the team went dormant.
It was in 2000 Chief Stanley learned of a State plan with Federal Grant money that we could use to get our team going again and after asking the membership and talking to outside departments if they were willing to participate in the team it was decided to go forward and run a Haz-Mat tech class.
The Hope Valley / Wyoming Fire District is one of 7 State recognized HAZMAT Teams, is the only volunteer team in the State of R.I., and is a credit to our area.
The Hope Valley / Wyoming FD Haz-Mat Team covers L.E.P.C 3 which is made up of- Block Island, Charlestown, Exeter, Hopkinton, Richmond, South Kingstown, Narragansett and Westerly.
Today we are Equipped with the latest and most up-to-date technology. We are 31 members strong with members from Ashaway, Carolina, Exeter, Hope Valley, South Kingstown, and Westerly. It is the dedication of all these people that makes our TEAM so successful.
2017: A used Freightliner box truck was purchased to replace the aging trailers #1 and #2. This box truck allows us to keep all of our Haz-Mat equipment in one spot, and the ability to stream line our responce to scenes.
