Working smoke/carbon monoxide detectors save lives. The average time to escape safely is only a few minutes with the volume of synthetics in homes so the earliest notification is imperative. Even if your detectors are hard wired, they require batteries! Leave nothing to chance, change your batteries. Detectors must be replaced every 7-10 years to maintain peak performance.
