It encourages members of the community to take a short quiz and help support their local fire departments. Every time a member of the community takes the quiz, a credit is given to their local fire department. The top ten fire departments with the most credits by the end of October receives $10,000. You can take the quiz by visiting this link: http://www.befiresmart.com/protect-your-community/fire-safety-pledge/ After taking the quiz, it asks you to fill out your name, email and town you live in and what your local fire department is. After, it sends you and email that needs to be verified before it can continue and credit the fire department. Please check your email and verify the email so we can receive credit. Wed, 12 Oct 2011 21:49:28 GMT http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=100 September 11, 2001 - September 11, 2011 - Ten Year Anniversary http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=99 This Sunday will mark the ten year anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. On that fateful day more than 3,000 Americans lost their lives, including more than 400 first responders. The events that took place on that day have forever changed America and the world as we know it. At 8:45am that morning, the first plane crashed into the first World Trade Tower. At first it was thought to be a freak accident, until everyone watched helplessly as a second plane crashed into the second Word Trade Tower, roughly 15 minutes later. A half an hour later, a plane crashes into the Pentagon and another half hour goes by before the last plane crashes in Pennsylvania. A war began in Iraq and Afghanistan as a response to the terrorist attacks. Since the beginning of these wars, an additional 5,000+ Americans have fallen in the line of duty. September 11th will forever be a day to remember the thousands of US citizens that have lost their lives on that day and in the wars that followed. As firefighters we will surely never forget the 343 firefighters that lost their lives that day. This September 11th, one of our fellow firefighters, Graham Devine, will be in Afghanistan serving our country in the Air Force. This is Graham's first trip over seas and we can't be more proud of him. We wish Graham a safe journey and that he returns home soon. We love you, Graham! Hope Valley – Wyoming Firefighters will remember the fallen victims of the 9.11 attacks as we participate in the second annual 9.11 Challenge Softball Tournament, this weekend Sept. 9th – 11th. Other teams participating include surrounding police and fire departments and other local organizations. Admission is free and refreshments are provided by the HVWFD Ladies Auxiliary and Exeter Dunkin Donuts. We hope to see you there! Fri, 09 Sep 2011 03:14:35 GMT http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=99 Hurricane Irene.. Storm May Be Over But Dangers Still Possible http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=98 Hurricane Irene may be over but there are still dangers all around us. HVWFD firefighters were reminded of these dangers when they responded to a structure fire early this morning. The fire started by a candle left unattended. Luckily firefighters responded quickly and there were no injuries and only a small amount of damage. This storm left thousands without power, which results in many using candles for light. It's extremely important to put candles in a place where they can't set anything on fire and never leave them lit while unattended. Other dangers to consider are downed power lines that are live and have the potential to ignite poles and trees around them. Be very cautious when approaching downed wires. HVWFD wants to thank all the members and Ladies Auxiliary for their help during the storm. Your time and help was immensely appreciated. Wed, 27 Apr 2011 20:15:15 GMT http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=83 Two incidents keep HVFD, Haz-Mat team busy http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=82 By The Sun Staff Two workers at plastic bead manufacturer Greene Plastics were transported to Westerly Hospital Monday as a precaution after fumes emanating from a machine sickened them. The Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire Department, along with its hazardous-materials team, was at the factory site on Canonchet Road in Hope Valley at about 1 p.m. HVFD Haz-Mat Capt. David Dumsar said the employees were working with a product that they don't ordinarily work with and the machine they were using was running too hot, causing three people exposure to formaldehyde gas. The machine was immediately shut down, said Dumsar. He said the plant was evacuated. He said the two workers who were transported were already feeling better when they were out in the fresh air. Workers were out of the building for 15 to 20 minutes. In an unrelated incident, the fire department and haz-mat teams were called out again this morning when the driver of a tractor-trailer rig carrying twin-boxes for retailer Advance Auto Parts took down a swath of guardrail and veered into the woods off Interstate 95 near Exit 3A, north, in Richmond at 4:30 a.m. The incident was not cleared until 8 a.m. Fire Chief Fred Stanley said it was extremely foggy at the time of the accident. Stanley said William L. Chambers, 37, of Fleetwood, Penn., suffered minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital. The crash, which required the local haz-mat team for a fuel leak, also garnered a response from the state departments of environmental management and transportation as well as the Rhode Island State Police. The contents of the boxes were reportedly not damaged in the incident. Wed, 27 Apr 2011 16:03:15 GMT http://www.hvwfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=82
