By Lieutenant Phil Tretton
August 21, 2014

At approximately 7:45 AM the Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire District was dispatched to Kingstown Rd. in the area of Wendy's and Mcdonalds for a container that was struck by a vehicle and now smoking. Car 907 was first to arrive and determine that approximately a gallon of hydrochloric acid had been spilled, and was actively reacting with the asphalt causing a dense vapor cloud. Firefighters used 25 pounds of baking soda to neutralize the acid followed by 15,000 gallons of water to flush the now powder solution off the road. pH paper was used to insure the acid had been naturalized and the runoff water was at a safe level. We would like to thank the Richmond-Carolina Fire District for providing an additional engine compnay.

Units: Special Hazards 900 and Engine 912

Mutual Aid: Carolina E-613
